Situation…
The annual Grads in Games ‘Search for a Star’ competition is open to final-year students. In the design category, participants submit a design document and showcase video of a game prototype produced to a specified brief which is then judged by a panel of industry veterans. As a self-taught designer with no formal training, these opportunities to pit myself against those studying design full-time are essential to hone my skills, learn from my peers and build a portfolio of work guided by industry briefs and feedback.
Task…
Choose two basic starting points (e.g. genres, mechanics, objects) that don’t conventionally go together and design and prototype a game or mechanic based on these two starting points coming together.
The project timescale was 30 hours spread over 3-4 weeks.
Action…
The Outcast God was my response to the brief: a fast-paced, 3D, first-person supernatural action/puzzle game that borrows the best elements of FPS and Puzzle games to create an explosive, chaotic, unique gameplay experience. Shoot fire from your hands, slow time, use the environment, perform executions, and manage your powers carefully to solve puzzles and elude death at the hands of hordes of vicious demonic entities and stop them from summoning a great and terrible power.
Result…
The project was selected as one of five finalists in the competition from a field of 20-30 submitted projects, and I was invited to take part in the finals day in Sheffield.
